<h4″>Giles County restaurant serves up culinary camp for kids
Actually, it’s not too much of a surprise – it is Kiely’s 10th birthday. And at the restaurant’s Children’s Hospitality & Cooking Camp, cake shows up in some form every day. The difference is now Kiely knows what goes into making a cake from scratch: the melting of the chocolate, the stirring, the baking. The Blacksburg resident learned how to make chocolate cake on her first day of camp.
But restaurateur Shaena Muldoon’s cooking camp in the former Giles County store isn’t all about cake, and it certainly isn’t a piece of cake. She runs the 7- to 14-year-old campers through multiple hands-on sessions of food preparation and hospitality instruction each day, throwing in science, etiquette and a dollop of nutrition information.
They come from just down the street or Blacksburg or Christiansburg or sometimes Brazil. Some return year after year, graduating to become camp assistants. Three now work at The Palisades.
